Slime Tire Inflator XL 40090 review

A 12V accessory-socket inflator with an analog 0–100 PSI dial, 1.2 CFM zero-pressure flow claim and 11.8 feet of stated total reach. Its exact manual gives car/crossover/truck tire scenarios, requires a 15A-or-higher outlet, limits continuous operation to 10 minutes with 25–30 minutes cooling, and does not document target-pressure auto-stop.

A useful fit for

A candidate for a driver with a verified 15A-or-higher 12V outlet who wants a manual-gauge pump with manufacturer scenarios for several car/crossover/truck-SUV tire sizes. It also has a ball/inflatable adapter route; the user must monitor pressure and respect the manual's cooling instructions.

The main tradeoff

The 40090 has no documented preset-pressure stop, requires a 15A outlet, and is not documented as battery- or clamp-powered. Its manual's tire times are manufacturer examples, not matched tests; the 100-PSI dial scale is not a working-pressure limit or accuracy rating. The exact manual limits run duration, requires cooling and forbids unattended use.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

What does the 40090 XL manual say about larger tires?

The manual's flat-to-35-PSI examples are 5 minutes for P205/55R16, 6 minutes for P235/60R18 and 7 minutes for P275/55R22; the 30-to-35-PSI examples are 30, 60 and 90 seconds. They are manufacturer scenarios rather than independent tests or guarantees for your tires. The same manual requires a 15A outlet and 10-minute maximum runs with cooling.

Will the 40090 stop at my selected pressure?

The exact 40090 product page and manual describe an analog 0–100 PSI dial and a manual on/off switch, but do not document user-selected target-pressure shutoff. Stay with the gauge and stop at the vehicle's recommended cold pressure. If preset auto-stop is essential, compare the distinct Digital XL 40093 or another exact model whose manual supports it.

Does the 40090 include a ball adapter?

Its exact manual depicts stored adapters labeled for inflatables and balls, so a sports-ball route is documented. The manual supplies no ball-pressure range and warns soft inflatables can lack pressure markings; follow the ball maker's limit and remain present. Continuous use is limited to 10 minutes with about 25–30 minutes cooling after excessive use.

What “XL” means in the 40090 sources

Slime’s Tire Inflator XL is part 40090, a corded 12V accessory-socket pump with an analog dial, an on/off switch, a quick-connect tire hose, work light and ThermalSense overheating safeguard. The useful distinction is not the XL name by itself: Slime publishes larger-tire examples for this model and its linked manual provides a more complete car, crossover and truck/SUV chart.

The exact manual lists 1.2 CFM at zero pressure, a 0–100 PSI / 0–7 bar dial scale, a 10.2-foot 12V power cord and 11.8 feet of total reach. Its maker-reported flat-to-35-PSI examples are five minutes for P205/55R16, six for P235/60R18 and seven for P275/55R22. For a 30-to-35-PSI top-off, the same chart gives 30 seconds, one minute and 90 seconds respectively. These are manufacturer scenarios, not independent measurements; they do not promise those times on another tire or vehicle. The dial’s 100-PSI endpoint is also not a published maximum working-pressure rating, and no accuracy tolerance appears in the reviewed material.

It is a manual-stop 12V setup

The 40090 manual calls for a 12V accessory outlet rated for at least 15 amps and says not to use older 8-amp cigarette-lighter receptacles. It recommends operating the vehicle engine for optimal pump performance, but warns not to start the vehicle with the inflator already plugged in. If running the engine, start it before connecting the pump. Slime also warns about exhaust and requires an open, well-ventilated area; a running vehicle in an enclosed space is unsafe.

This version’s analog gauge and on/off switch require the user to watch pressure and stop the pump. The exact 40090 sources do not document a user-selected automatic pressure stop. That is a functional difference from the Digital Tire Inflator XL 40093, whose page does claim Inflate-Right target stopping, and from the earlier Deluxe Digital 40077. If a target stop is essential, do not treat a dial or ThermalSense overheat safeguard as a substitute.

Duty cycle and included attachments

The manual says not to operate continuously for more than 10 minutes. It describes ThermalSense as an overheating safeguard and says to allow about 25 to 30 minutes for the unit to cool after excessive use. It also says not to leave the inflator unattended. These directions matter even though the product page calls the pump compact and fast: the published times cover individual example tires, not a promise to fill a sequence without cooling.

The exact manual illustrates the tire hose and stored adapters for “Inflatables | Balls,” so a ball-adapter route is documented. It cautions that soft inflatables may not have a recommended pressure marking and can be damaged by overinflation; the sources provide no ball-pressure range. Use the ball manufacturer’s guidance and remain present. For tire use, the product page’s quick-connect lever instructions and exact manual show the press-on head: the black lever is pushed down to lock, while Slime says older green levers lift to lock. Check the physical head and its version-specific instructions.

Who should consider the XL?

This model belongs on a shortlist for a driver who has a verified 15-amp-or-higher 12V outlet, wants a larger-tire application example, accepts manual pressure monitoring and can work within the 10-minute / cooling instructions. The manual’s separate car, crossover and truck/SUV examples are more informative than a single generic “fast inflation” statement, but they are not tire-size guarantees.

Look elsewhere if you need an internal battery, direct battery clamps, confirmed preset stopping, or a documented maximum working pressure or gauge tolerance. Before purchase, check that the listing is specifically 40090, that the outlet rating meets the manual, and that the exact offer includes the hose and ball/inflatable adapters you expect. Confirm the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure, check the exact head revision, and make sure the expected job fits the manual’s cooling interval. This is a document-based assessment; no hands-on inflation test or timing was performed.
