VIAIR 400P EF Automatic Portable Compressor (part 40145) review

A 12V direct-battery compressor with a 30-foot hose, trigger gun and listed Presta adapter. The operator manually manages tire pressure; the fixed pump switch is not a preset tire stop.

A useful fit for

A source-based candidate for a suitable 12V direct-battery setup where a long hose, trigger gun and manual pressure checks are preferred.

The main tradeoff

It draws up to 30A, requires a 40A fused battery-clamp connection and engine-running operation, and has no documented preset tire-pressure stop.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does the 40145 stop at a tire pressure I select?

No selected tire-target stop is documented. The manual says to manage airflow with the trigger gun, pause to check pressure, and turn the compressor off at the desired tire pressure. Its fixed 130/155-PSI switch protects the pump rather than setting a tire target.

Can I power the 40145 from a vehicle accessory socket?

The reviewed manual specifies 12V direct-battery clamp use, a 30A maximum draw and a 40A fuse, and requires the engine to run. It does not document an accessory-socket configuration; check the vehicle circuit and exact supplied connections.

Does the kit list a Presta adapter for bicycle valves?

Yes. VIAIR lists a Presta adapter and a three-piece tip kit, and the manual covers bicycle tires. Confirm the adapter is in the exact seller package and follow the tire maker’s pressure guidance; no bicycle fill-time claim is established here.

The VIAIR 400P EF Automatic, part 40145, is a 12-volt compressor kit with a battery-clamp lead, a 30-foot hose and a trigger-style inflation gun. The EF name marks it as a separate updated model, not another way to write the earlier 400P-AUTO / 40045. Its listing uses “Automatic,” but the dedicated manual still leaves tire-pressure decisions to the operator. This is a document-based assessment; it does not report hands-on use or measured fill times.

“Automatic” describes the pump cycle, not a target you enter

VIAIR describes the 40145 as an enhanced-flow update to its 400P Automatic. The updated page lists an SAE power connection and revised head, and advertises up to 10% faster filling and 20% more performance. Those are manufacturer comparisons, not results from an independent test or a guarantee for a particular tire. The page also lists a 100%-at-40-PSI and 33%-at-100-PSI duty claim. The manual gives an approximate 20-minute continuous-use figure at 72°F and 100 PSI; do not translate either rating into a predicted number of tires or minutes for your vehicle.

The more important shopping distinction is what automatic does not mean here. The 40145 manual describes a user-operated inflation gun: pull the trigger to let air flow, release it to check the gauge, and switch the compressor off when the target is reached. A fixed pressure switch cuts the pump at about 155 PSI and restarts it below about 130 PSI. That protects the compressor from excessive line pressure; it is not a user-selected tire-pressure stop. If a preset tire target is essential, the reviewed manual does not establish that capability.

Plan on a battery connection, not a dash socket

The manual specifies 12-volt DC operation, a maximum current draw of 30 amps and a 40-amp fuse. The package includes dual battery clamps connected through a two-pin SAE lead; the current product page lists a six-foot power cord. Its instructions require the vehicle engine to be running during operation. Although the SAE connector is described as allowing other power attachments, those are not the same thing as an included accessory-socket setup. Confirm your vehicle’s electrical arrangement and the exact lead supplied before choosing this kit. It is neither a cordless pump nor a small plug-in top-off device.

For a suitable direct-battery arrangement, the trigger gun offers a different routine from the basic 400P hose: the operator can pause tire airflow at the gun rather than managing only the compressor switch. The 30-foot hose provides reach around a vehicle, and the kit lists a heat-shielded quick connection, a three-piece inflation-tip set, a Presta adapter, a carry bag and the compressor’s I-beam tray. The gauge is marked to 160 PSI with a stated ±3% tolerance, while the compressor’s working maximum is 150 PSI. The manual warns that airflow affects the reading; release the trigger, allow the gauge to settle and use the vehicle’s recommended tire pressure rather than the compressor’s maximum as a target.

How it differs from other 400P packages

The standard 400P / 40043 is a different 12V clamp configuration with a multifunction inflator/deflator hose and a 100-PSI inline gauge. The older 400P-AUTO / 40045 also has a trigger gun, but it is a distinct part with its own lead, hose package and manual. Part 40145 is the EF update identified by VIAIR’s current product page and dedicated manual; its newer SAE connection, revised head and stated EF claims should not be assumed to describe 40043 or 40045. Check the part number, not a broad marketplace title that says only “400P.”

The manufacturer image for 40145 shows the compressor body marked 400P-A together with the gun, hose, clamps and case. It is useful for recognizing the configuration, but a product image cannot confirm that a particular seller will ship every pictured item. Compare the listing’s exact part and package against VIAIR’s current contents list, especially if you need the Presta adapter or another accessory.

Heat, attention and fit still set the limits

The 40145 manual warns that the compressor and connected hose fittings become hot. It calls for a ventilated work area, an upright compressor, a fully uncoiled power lead, protection from water and soft sand, and continuous operator attention. The thermal protector can shut the unit down after excessive heat; the manual says to turn the switch off and let it cool before resuming. This is a heavier, tethered compressor kit with a real duty limit, not an unattended convenience inflator. No tire-size capacity or universal fit follows from the 150-PSI maximum, the EF claims or the 30-foot hose.

On paper, the 400P EF Automatic is a candidate for someone who can make a suitable 12V battery connection and wants a long hose with a trigger-controlled gun. It is a poor match for someone who needs outlet power, cordless use, a preset pressure stop or a compact kit. Before buying, verify 40145, the clamps and fuse, the exact accessory package, and the manual’s electrical, pressure, duty and hot-component instructions.
