Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does the 400P-RVS automatically stop at a pressure I enter?
No selected-tire-pressure stop is documented for the 40044. The manual’s inflation procedure tells the user to release the trigger at the desired pressure; the fixed compressor pressure switch protects internal pressure rather than tracking a tire target. Pause the airflow to check the gauge and remain present.
Explore this need in the finder →Can the 40044 run from a 12V accessory socket?
VIAIR documents direct battery clamps, up to 30A draw and engine-running use, not a dashboard-socket arrangement. The manual specifies a 40A fuse and the exact-part drawing labels 40A clamps; follow the model instructions and verify the vehicle electrical setup rather than assuming that any 12V outlet is suitable.
Explore this need in the finder →What do the two hose sections and alternate chucks add?
The exact 40044 page lists a 30-foot primary hose and a 30-foot extension, a trigger gun, a 45-degree reach chuck and a separate 90-degree twist-on chuck. These serve different valve-access arrangements; the Presta adapter belongs with the standard gun route. Verify the part number and complete package before relying on a marketplace photo.
Explore this need in the finder →The VIAIR 400P-RVS / part 40044 is a 12-volt compressor kit designed around RV tire access: direct battery clamps, an inflation gun, a primary hose and extension hose, plus separate reach and twist-on attachments. It is a distinct configuration from the similarly named 400P-RV / 40047 and from VIAIR’s 400P EF versions. The exact manufacturer page and dedicated 40044 manual support this assessment; it is not a hands-on evaluation.
Read “automatic” as a model name, not a tire-target guarantee
The 40044 page describes an automatic RVS compressor and a shut-off function. The manual explains the tire operation differently: the compressor is switched on, the inflation gun trigger is held, and the operator releases the trigger at the desired pressure. Its built-in pressure switch protects the compressor at a fixed internal pressure; it does not document a user-selected tire target. A pressure switch inside a compressor and preset auto-stop at a tire’s selected PSI are different functions. If a preset target stop is essential, this fact set does not confirm it for the 40044.
During inflation the inline gun gauge may not give an accurate reading because air is moving. The manual directs the operator to release the trigger to check pressure. The gun also has a bleeder function, so this is a manually controlled inflate-and-adjust tool, not a set-and-walk-away appliance. Use the RV’s recommended pressure and stay present throughout the work.
Clamp power has to match the vehicle setup
The 40044 is not documented as a cigarette-lighter or accessory-socket compressor. VIAIR lists 12 volts and 30 amps maximum draw; its manual says to attach the clamps only with the switch off and requires the vehicle engine to be running. The dedicated manual specifies a 40-amp fuse, and the exact-part drawing labels 40-amp battery clamps. Those are separately named electrical details; confirm the seller’s exact assembly and follow the current manual rather than inferring socket suitability from the 12-volt label.
VIAIR lists a 33% duty cycle at 100 PSI. The manual states a 20-minute-on, 40-minute-off schedule at 72°F and 100 PSI. The page’s 2.30 CFM is measured at zero PSI and the 150-PSI maximum is a compressor limit, not a useful tire target. The product page’s maximum-tire-size reference is 275/80R22.5; it does not establish fill time for every RV tire, starting pressure or outside temperature. For multi-wheel work, plan around the manual’s cooling interval instead of assuming the word “automatic” means continuous operation.
Three different hose-end choices
The manufacturer lists a 30-foot primary hose and a 30-foot extension, a standard trigger gun, a 45-degree extended-reach chuck and a 90-degree twist-on chuck with its own hose. The 45-degree piece is intended to reach difficult positions; the twist-on option is a separate valve connection for limited clearance. Neither is the same setup as the trigger gun’s regular press-on chuck. VIAIR also lists a Presta adapter and says it is needed for Presta bicycle valves. Treat that adapter as part of the standard gun route, and check the exact package rather than assuming every attachment can be stacked together.
Long hose reach can reduce the need to move the compressor, but it does not remove setup constraints. The manual says to keep the unit upright, place it near the side being serviced, fully extend the power cord and avoid pulling it by the hoses. The compressor and fittings become hot. VIAIR warns that the included hose can be affected by prolonged UV exposure and freezing conditions; it should be stowed between uses and kept away from the hot compressor head.
Where 400P-RVS sits in the lineup
The 40044 shares its 33%-at-100-PSI duty class with the 300P-RVS / 30034, but it is a larger RVS model with a higher chart-listed tire-size reference and a 30-foot primary plus extension hose package. The 450P-RVS / 45057 is the other high-reach alternative, with VIAIR publishing 100% duty at 100 PSI for that exact model. Those are different manufacturer operating claims, not a matched speed comparison. The 400P-RV / 40047 should also not be assumed to be the same package just because the names are close; verify the four-digit part number and manual on an offer.
Pre-purchase checks
This configuration makes sense to investigate if the required route is battery clamps, the vehicle can run during inflation, and the job benefits from extended hose and optional angled or twist-on access. It is a poor fit if a vehicle socket, cordless power or selected-pressure auto-stop is mandatory, or if the planned workload cannot pause for the specified duty cycle. Confirm part 40044, the manual revision, hose sections, 45- and 90-degree attachments, Presta adapter, fuse and clamp arrangement, and the vehicle’s tire-pressure guidance. Published maximum pressure and zero-PSI airflow do not promise a fit or fill time for a particular tire.
