Your needs, this model
Does it fit your priorities?
Does 45144 stop at a tire pressure I enter?
No user-selected target stop is documented. The manual says to operate the trigger gun, pause airflow to read pressure, and switch the compressor off at the desired tire pressure. Its fixed 130/155-PSI pump switch is overpressure protection, not a tire preset.

The exact manual lists an included Presta adapter and describes bicycle inflation using the supplied tip set. Check that the exact seller offer includes the adapter and follow the bicycle tire maker's pressure limit; no bicycle fill-time claim is established here.

The 45144 manual documents a 12V SAE lead with battery clamps and lists 23A maximum current; it requires the vehicle engine to be running. It does not document a vehicle accessory-socket setup.
Explore this need in the finder →The VIAIR 450P EF Automatic is a large, direct-battery compressor for a driver who wants a vehicle-side pump, not a cordless box or cigarette-lighter accessory. The current US listing and dedicated manual identify part 45144. That suffix matters: it is the EF update to the 450P Automatic, but not the 450P-AUTO / 45043 reviewed elsewhere here, nor the RV-hose version 45157. This is a source-based assessment, not a hands-on test or a fit guarantee.
Start with the electrical setup
Part 45144 uses a 12-volt two-pin SAE lead and supplied battery clamps. The manual lists 23 amps maximum and a 40-amp fuse, and says the engine must be running during operation. Treat that as a direct-battery arrangement: the page does not document an accessory-socket option, so a dashboard outlet is not an interchangeable convenience connection. Check the vehicle manual and the pump's exact instructions before attaching anything, and do not replace or adapt the specified circuit based on the product's nominal voltage alone.
VIAIR lists a six-foot power cord. The air hose is a separate 30 feet, so the working reach is mainly determined by where the pump can sit safely and the hose can travel—not by treating all cable and hose measurements as one number. A long hose can help reach around a vehicle, but it does not solve access to a battery that is covered or awkwardly placed.
“Automatic” is not a preset tire target
Despite the model name, the 45144 does not document a user-entered pressure cutoff. Its manual describes a trigger-operated inflation gun: the operator admits air, releases the trigger to let the gauge settle and checks pressure, then switches off the compressor at the tire maker's target. VIAIR lists a fixed pump pressure switch that cuts in at 130 PSI and out at 155 PSI; that protects the compressor against excess internal pressure, not a tire setpoint. The manual also describes automatic thermal protection, which is a safety circuit, not pressure automation.
The included gun has a 160-PSI gauge with a stated ±3% tolerance. The manual cautions that airflow can make readings inaccurate until the trigger is released. That means a person must remain with the unit, manage the trigger and verify pressure rather than walking away after setting a number. Use the pressure on the vehicle placard or tire maker's instructions, not the pump's maximum-pressure figure.
Duty and flow claims need their conditions
VIAIR publishes 100% duty at 100 PSI; the manual bounds that as about one hour continuous at 100 PSI and 72°F. The part-specific sheet adds a pressure-dependent flow table: 2.19 CFM at 0 PSI, 1.70 at 40, 1.34 at 90 and 0.95 at 150. Zero-pressure flow is not the rate maintained while a tire builds pressure. The sheet also lists manufacturer fill scenarios: 35x12.5 R15 from 0 to 40 PSI in 7:41 (±15 seconds), or 10 to 40 in 5:54 (±10); 37x12.5 R15 in 8:50 (±15) and 6:41 (±15), respectively. These are bounded manufacturer data, not our measurements or promises for another tire.
VIAIR says EF offers up to 10% faster filling and 20% more performance than the prior platform; treat that as the maker's comparison. The page's “high flow for oversized tires” is not universal size approval. Published dimensions also conflict: the product page/drawing list 12.5 x 7.57 x 6.69 inches, while the 45144 sheet lists 12.4 x 5.8 x 7.4. Confirm storage clearance from the exact current drawing before relying on a dimension.
What is in the 45144 kit
The listed kit is the compressor, SAE clamps, heat-shielded quick-connect hose, gun/gauge, three-piece tip kit, Presta adapter, sand tray and bag. The press-on gun is the documented Schrader route; the manual also discusses bicycle tires, toys and balls with tips. VIAIR does not itemize the three tips, so an included ball needle is not proven. An official photo is not a seller-package guarantee.
The distinction from 45157 is practical: 45144 has one listed 30-foot hose and press-on gun, while the RV package has two hoses and reach attachments. Both share published 12V, 23A and 150-PSI limits, but one package should not inherit the other's fittings. Confirm the needed route instead of assuming an adapter converts every chuck.
Heat, placement and storage are part of the job
The manual warns that the compressor and connected hose or fittings become hot, requires upright use in a ventilated area and calls for a fully uncoiled power lead. It says not to run the unit in water or soft sand, and to let it cool before putting it back in its bag. Those instructions make this a hands-on, vehicle-side setup rather than a sealed appliance to leave unattended. The listed IP54 rating should not be read as waterproof operation; the manual explicitly warns against exposing the running compressor to water.
Who should shortlist it?
The 45144 makes sense to compare when a 12V clamp-powered package and manual trigger control are acceptable, the user can run the engine, and the included 30-foot hose and press-on gun suit the intended access. Its reach, Presta adapter and higher published duty rating distinguish it from smaller socket pumps, but also bring a battery connection, storage volume and operator involvement. Someone needing preset stopping, quiet compact storage, or an accessory-socket-only routine should look elsewhere in this library.
Before ordering, confirm the exact part number 45144, not 45043 or 45157, and compare the seller's clamps, hose, gun, tips and Presta adapter to the manufacturer list. Confirm the vehicle's electrical instructions, the target tire pressure, wheel access and the permitted operating period in the current manual. This is a source-based assessment, not a test report; the official image identifies the model-and-kit style but does not establish fill time or the contents of a particular offer.
