VIAIR 450P-RV EF Automatic Portable Compressor (part 45157) review

A 12V direct-battery RV compressor with a trigger gun and separate RV reach attachments; the product page and part sheet disagree about hose lengths, and pressure control remains manual despite the Automatic name.

A useful fit for

A source-based candidate for an RV or dually routine where direct battery power, a two-hose layout, manual trigger control and the listed 45-degree/90-degree attachments fit the vehicle's access needs.

The main tradeoff

This is a large tethered kit requiring an engine-running clamp connection and manual target control. The hose-length and body-dimension claims conflict, its page's 40-inch-chuck phrase is not reconciled with the manual, and no exact tire/wheel fit is guaranteed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Does 45157 stop at a tire pressure I enter?

No user-selected stop is documented. The manual directs the operator to work the tire-gun trigger, pause airflow to read the gauge, and switch the pump off at the target; its fixed 130/155-PSI pump switch is not a tire preset.

What does the RV version add over the standard 450P EF Automatic?

The product page lists a 25-foot primary hose plus a 20-foot extension, but the part-specific information sheet says 30 feet plus 30 feet; the manual confirms two hoses without lengths. The manual names 45-degree extended reach and a 90-degree twist-on chuck, while the page also says '40-inch twist-on chuck.' Verify the seller's exact package.

Can 45157 reach an inner dually wheel?

VIAIR describes it as dually compatible and its package list includes a 45-degree extended-reach attachment; that does not establish clearance on every wheel or valve. Confirm the specific vehicle access, hose routing and the exact item in the seller's package.

The VIAIR 450P-RV EF Automatic (part 45157) is the long-reach sibling to the 450P EF Automatic, not the earlier 450P-RV / 45053 or 450P RVS / 45057. Its exact product page and manual describe a 12V clamp-powered compressor packaged for RV and dual-wheel access. The difference is the supplied hose and attachments—not a shared 450P-family kit. This source-based assessment is not a hands-on test or a guarantee that a particular wheel and valve can be reached.

RV reach is the main package difference

The product page lists a 25-foot primary hose and 20-foot extension (45 feet total); the 45157 part sheet lists 30 feet for each hose (60 feet total). The manual confirms two hoses but gives no lengths, so actual reach is unresolved. It names a 45-degree reach piece for dual wheels and a separate 90-degree twist-on chuck. By contrast, 45144 has one listed 30-foot hose and a press-on gun. The RV page also says “40-inch twist-on chuck,” which the manual does not explain.

There is a manufacturer wording conflict worth checking. The product-page introduction says the kit has a “40-inch twist-on chuck,” while its feature list and the dedicated manual describe 45-degree reach and a 90-degree twist-on chuck. The manual's inflation procedure uses those named pieces; it does not explain the 40-inch phrase. This review does not silently turn that phrase into a third confirmed attachment. If the long reach piece is decisive, ask the seller to identify the actual part shown in the offer and compare it to the current manual.

Power and controls remain manual

Part 45157 runs from a 12V, two-pin SAE lead and battery clamps. VIAIR lists 23 amps maximum, a 40-amp fuse and a six-foot cord; the manual says the engine must run. A dashboard socket is not documented. Check the vehicle's electrical instructions: a connector that fits is not proof that a circuit is suitable.

“Automatic” is part of the name, not a user-selected pressure cutoff. The operator holds the gun trigger, pauses airflow to check the gauge, and switches off at the tire maker's target. The fixed 130-PSI cut-in / 155-PSI cut-out switch protects the compressor; it is not tire automation. The manual lists a 160-PSI gauge with ±3% tolerance and a 150-PSI compressor limit, and says airflow can distort readings until paused. Stay with the equipment and follow the vehicle or tire maker's cold-pressure recommendation.

Longer duty does not necessarily mean faster for one tire

The page rates 45157 at 100% duty at 100 PSI; its manual specifies about one hour continuous at 100 PSI and 72°F. The part sheet also gives a pressure-flow curve: 2.19 CFM at zero PSI, 1.70 at 40, 1.34 at 90 and 0.95 at 150. For one 245/70R19.5 tire from 60 to 80 PSI, VIAIR reports 2:02 for 45157 versus 1:39 for 400P-RV EF / 40144, describing the 400 as faster for that case and the 450 as the longer-run option. The sheet contains additional, pressure-specific 255/70R22.5 and 275/80R22.5 scenarios. These company figures are not a prediction for another tire. Its “up to 10% faster / 20% more performance” claim compares EF with the previous 450P-RV, not every model.

Included uses and what is not established

The manual lists the 45-degree reach part, 90-degree twist-on chuck, Presta adapter and three-piece tip kit, with instructions for bicycles, toys and sports balls. The tips are not itemized as a ball needle, so the finder does not count that attachment as included. The RV fittings are not interchangeable with every accessory merely because they connect to the gun; check the exact piece needed for the valve.

VIAIR describes dually compatibility, but that wording cannot promise clearance on every wheel, cap or inner valve stem. Confirm that the angle and hose can physically reach the valve without stressing the fitting. An optional product photo can show the maker's intended kit without guaranteeing that a marketplace seller includes every attachment pictured.

Setup and heat need room

The manual requires upright, ventilated operation with the lead uncoiled and warns against running the unit in water or soft sand. Compressor, hose and fittings get hot; cool them before storage. IP54 is not waterproofing. The part sheet and product page also disagree about body dimensions (12.4 x 5.8 x 7.4 inches versus 12.5 x 7.57 x 6.69); confirm exact storage clearance rather than relying on one set. This still needs a running vehicle.

How it compares with 45144

Both EF Automatic models use 12V clamps, draw up to 23A, list a 150-PSI maximum and claim 100% duty at 100 PSI. Their packages differ: 45144 has one listed 30-foot hose and press-on gun; the 45157 page says 25+20 feet, but its part sheet says 30+30, and it adds RV reach parts including a twist-on chuck. VIAIR's one-tire scenario does not make 45157 faster for that case. Compare the exact ratings and attachments, not the model-name shorthand.

Shortlist 45157 if the long hose, dually access and manual 12V setup fit your vehicle. Before purchase, confirm part 45157, the 25/20-foot hoses, the exact angle attachments, clamps, gun, Presta adapter and tips in the offer; verify the electrical setup and your tire's required pressure. If you instead need preset stopping, a smaller footprint or a socket-powered unit, choose a different reviewed arrangement. The manufacturer image is a model-and-kit reference, not a measured performance result or a promise about seller fulfillment.
